    A Red River Area Sportsmen’s Club meeting was held at the Wahpeton Community Center on Thursday, August 26th from 7:30-9 PM. Curt Mund, Greg Gerou, Jerry Oren, Abby / Kelly Carlson, Rich / Becci Truesdell, Paul Sinner, Kevin Manock, Greg Braun, Cindie VanTassel and Wayne Beyer attended the meeting.

    Motion-Second-Carried (MSC) – (Mund, Oren) to approve 7-29-21 minutes.

    President’s Report

    • MSC (Rich Truesdell, Manock) to approve $200 scholarship for Carter Gerou who attended a Lutheran Island Camp that included archery and kayaking.
    • Brenda Thomson, Cub Scout leader asked for help during a ‘Hooked on Fishing’ event in late September or early October. They are hoping for three locations – Red River, Fergus Falls and Alexandria. Cindie VanTassel called her to find out a local pack already scheduled it on October 2nd.
    • Busy fall events calendar was made available.
    • 25-30 people attended the Tewaukon Refuge volunteer appreciation grilling event on Friday, July 30th.
    • Several wood duck nest boxes were delivered to Tewaukon Refuge.
    • Congratulations to Mary and Nathan Rausch on the birth of their beautiful daughter – Kamryn Josephine. Cindie VanTassel will send a card.

    Parks & Recreation

    • Probable botulism outbreak has resulted in a mallard duck die-off at a Chahinkapa Park pond.
    • $3000 NDGF grant received for youth hunts can be used for a variety of youth hunting experiences.
    • Chahinkapa Park fishing pier was pulled in for repairs due to broken steel rods.
    • Aquatic Nuisance Species cleaning station will be installed this fall. Heitkamp Construction will widen the road by the fish cleaning station.
    • PLOTS Guides are available.
    • $200+ trap thrower expense will be submitted to NDGF for youth hunts.

    Treasurer’s Report

    • July expenditures included Game Wardens Museum – $250, Parks-Rec – $214.52 and Cindie VanTassel – $41.50 for Jr. Wildlife Club, $25 to Prairie Pothole Partners for Randy Hoerer oak tree memorial and Joe Keller – $474.89 for NDWF summer meeting in Bismarck.
    • MSC (Braun, Mund) to donate $300 to Twist of Fate.

    Sportsmen’s Smoker

    Members, Committees and Projects

    • Rich and Becci will volunteer for a float at NDSCS homecoming parade on Saturday, September 25th.
    • The Marv Manock Youth Waterfowl Hunt is scheduled on Saturday, September 18th. Kevin Manock reported Drew Bajumpaa will help with duck calling after the pre-hunt trap shoot on Friday, September 17th. Cindie VanTassel got prizes. Interested youth hunters can sign up and volunteers are needed.
    • Greg talked to Mark Althoff and Chuck Haus about the Youth Pheasant Hunt on Saturday, October 2nd. Cap is 15. Chuck is looking forward to hosting it again. Tim Fenske, Great Bend has offered pheasant hunting land that could be used if interest exceeds 15 hunters. Interested youth hunters can sign up and volunteers are needed. Mentors with dogs will need to be coordinated by Mark.
    • Head of Red Trap Club is having a fun shoot on Saturday, September 11th.
    • Joe Pikarski Trap Club is hosting a turkey shoot on Labor Day.
    • Jr. Wildlife Club toured the ‘Preserve the Tradition Museum’ on Thursday, August 19th. It features impressive critters from around the world.
    • Neil Heitkamp Ice Fishing Derby is scheduled on Saturday, February 19, 2022.
    • Vince Herding Youth Fishing Derby is scheduled on May 7, 2022.
    • Dick Bell Catfish Derby on Saturday, June 4, 2022 needs a chairperson.
    • Brunk’s Carp & Sucker Derby attracted 20 youths at its Wednesday, August 4th tournament.
    • Fall Youth Goose Hunt is scheduled on September 11-12, 2021. Recruitment has started.
    • The Ladies Rooster Roundup at the Chuck Haus farm on Saturday, October 16th already has 12 signups. Application is on the web site. Volunteers are needed.
    • The National Wild Turkey Federation fund-raiser sponsored by the Richland Renegade Toms is scheduled on February 4, 2022.
    • Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation spring fund-raiser is yet to be scheduled.
    • The Veterans Hunt on Saturday, September 11th at Stiklestad Lodge, Ft Ransom has been cut back to one day due to lack of outside funding sources (grants, donations). Participant application and poster have been added to the club’s website and have been sent out. Four people have signed up. Volunteers are needed.
    • Website domain has been paid up for another year.
    • Some fixes are needed for the Mooreton Pond fishing piers.
    • Bois de Sioux River fishing pier is displaced. Low river levels have revealed plenty of garbage in the river bed.
    • Kidder Recreation Area / Red River bench plaques are a work-in-progress.
    • Pop-up online store is being worked on.
    • NAVHDA is tabling a $500 land grant application til next year. The land is in Richland County near Kindred. Grass seeding is planned by volunteers.

    The next meeting is scheduled at the Wahpeton Community Center at 7:30 PM on Thursday, September 16th.

  • The Larry Legacy

    Dear Editor,

    Back in March of 1985, the idea of a local sportsmen/wildlife organization was envisioned by members of the Wahpeton and Breckenridge community, that wanting to promote conservation along with improving hunting and fishing in the area. One very significant individual of that early group was Larry Brunkhorst. He wanted a working group for sportspeople and wildlife conservationists to work on safeguarding our outdoor heritage and habitat development. This passion lead him to become the clubs first President and he held that position for many years. The organization that is known as the Red River Area Sportsmen’s Club is a true reflection of Larry’s commitment to and passion for the outdoors, the local wildlife and habitat conservation. Little did he know what the future held for the RRASC?

    Since its successful beginning, the RRASC has evolved to include “passing along our outdoor heritage” as part of its mission. This has been realized by providing opportunities for hundreds of young people to experience hunting, fishing, habitat conservation and other out-of-doors activities, all focused on developing their interested in the outdoors. One of these events is true Larry Brunkhorst; named Brunk’s Carp and Sucker Derby, fishing for species that many people would throw back. During these derbies, no fish that were weighted in were never wasted.

    Arrangements were made with Chahinkapa Zoo and the fish went to feed the zoo animals. In true “Brunk” fashion, it was one more way to get young people out to enjoy the sport of fishing. Held in early August, it rounds out clubs fishing events, and is a great way to end the summer.

    Because of the foresight of Larry and the other founders, the club has become an integral part of the South East North Dakota/West Central Minnesota working to enhance the outdoor experience for the people that live in the area. It has also grown into a working partner of larger groups throughout North Dakota and Minnesota, all striving toward the same goals. These include the North Dakota Game & Fish Department, Minnesota Department of Natural Resources and the North Dakota Wildlife Federation.

    Through the years, Larry has contributed to various club projects, taking the lead on some and working hard on others to insure each one was done properly, for the benefit of people, the club and especially the wildlife. If you followed the meeting minutes over the years, there are very few where Larry’s name did not appear on the list of attendees. Just another element of his steadfast dedication to conservation.

      In the spring of 2010, Larry was recognized for his contributions, with the Lifetime Achievement Award, only the second person in the clubs history to receive that tribute. The clubs bylaws state, “The award for Lifetime Achievement, seeks to identify and recognize club member(s) for their lifelong achievements in support of the purpose and goals of the RRASC”. Through Larry’s commitment to the club, there was no one more deserving of receiving this recognition. The award has a special distinction in that; the nominations come from club members (peers of the person being nominated). These members have witnessed the individuals work, and acknowledged that they are deserving of recognition and appreciation for their continuous contributions. Larry was also one the first people to be presented with the clubs Lifetime Membership Award.

    The Red River Area Sportsmen’s Club has a tradition of honoring club members with a tree planting at the Tewaukon National Wildlife Refuge south of Cayuga, North Dakota. Larry’s name will be added to this register and be forever recognized for his commitment to the environment and wildlife conservation.

    If you visit the refuge, the plaque near the main building entrance denotes all the people that have been honored with a tree planting. He will be in some very good company.

    Larry’s legacy lives on in the Red River Area Sportsmen’s Club, through it events, its wildlife project, its commitment to conservation and youth activities. An enormous thank you goes to Larry for having the foresight to establish such a unique organization. I do not see it slowing down any time soon. We recognize the value the clubs provides and the members will do our best to keep your dream alive

      It was appropriate that Larry’s memorial service took place on Thursday, Dec. 11, 2020. It was the third Thursday of the month. The Red River Area Sportsmen’s Club holds its monthly meetings on the third Thursday of the month. We did have a meeting that night; and I know Larry was there is sprit.

    I attended Larry’s memorial service, funeral and the military honors that followed. It was a fitting tribute to “Brunk” for a life well lived. God speed, my friend.

    A two-day pheasant hunt for disabled veterans, Warriors on the Wing will begin Saturday, Sept. 11. The event is expected to be held at Stiklestad Lodge, Fort Ransom, North Dakota.

    The Red River Area Sportsmen’s Club and the Cass County Sportsmen’s Club have collaborated to create the 1st Annual Warriors on the Wing event.

    A two-day pheasant hunt for disabled veterans, Warriors on the Wing will begin Saturday, Sept. 11. The event is expected to be held at Stiklestad Lodge, Fort Ransom, North Dakota, Daily News previously reported. Organizers say their goal is to offer Warriors on the Wing at no charge to local disabled veterans.

    “To offer this event at no charge to our local disabled veterans, we need to raise roughly $5,800,” Abby Carlson said. “We are more than 50 percent to our goal. Every additional dollar brings us one step closer to supporting our veterans.”

    Warriors on the Wing would not be possible without the generous support from local communities, Red River Area Sportsmen’s Club President Greg Gerou said.

    “Any monetary donation is appreciated and will go directly to support this event for our veterans,” he said.

    Warriors on the Wing organizers shared a planned event schedule.

    “On the first day, the veterans will be getting to know one another, creating friendships and developing new support groups,” Carlson said. “We will be guiding them through the basics of pheasant hunting, including bird identification, bird cleaning, North Dakota laws and regulation, hunting dogs and hunter’s safety.”

    Veterans will also be able to practice their rifle marksmanship on the long range and enjoy a 3-D archery range. Sunday, Sept. 12 will be spent in the field, hunting and putting to use information from the day prior.

    “Our ultimate goal is to create a new foundation for outdoor sportsman ship and a network for support for our local veterans,” Gerou said. “We are all aware of the struggles of our veterans and soldiers. One of the goals is to offer a pathway for them to develop a passion for the outdoors and instill additional camaraderie among these valued members of our communities.”

    Both the Red River Area Sportsmen’s Club and Cass County Sportsmen’s Club will start advertising for veterans and hunters in July.

    Earlier this year, Carlson said she hopes Warriors on the Wing will be “an honorable event, something respectful and healing.”

    The late SFC. Michelle Grecco, who lost her life to suicide in July 2020, was one of Carlson’s best friends, Daily News reported in March. At the time of her death, Grecco had just retired from the United States Army.

    “Our goal was to get her involved in the outdoors, in hunting,” Carlson said previously. “Her passing brought me into this.”

    The Red and Bois de Sioux rivers hosted anglers of all ages Saturday, June 5. The Red River Area Sportsmen’s Club (RRASC) sponsored the 22nd Annual Dick Bell Catfish Tournament.

    Catches could qualify for two categories. There was a youth division and a division offering prize money for the five catfish with the largest weights.

    “As in the past, this was a catch and release tournament,” RRASC President Greg Gerou said. “All the ‘cats’ went back into the river.”

    Tournament participants could fish anywhere along the Red and Bois de Sioux rivers, Gerou said. The tournament was open from 7-11 a.m., with all fish needing to be presented before the event concluded.

    “A big thank you goes to Justin Kratz, who chaired the event. He has been the chair for a number of years and has done a great job running the tournament,” Gerou said.

    Gerou’s tournament work included taking pictures and helping to weigh fish. Cindie Van Tassel, who helped with registering participants, and Wayne Beyer, who prepared equipment, were also among the volunteers.

    “Catfish are king on the Red River,” Beyer previously wrote. “It’s not uncommon for our campgrounds to host fishermen from Iowa, Missouri, Nebraska and Kansas seeking a weekend getaway by catching channel catfish.”

    There was one entry in this year’s youth division, Gerou said. Delvin Bigwood received the first place trophy and a $50 check from the RRASC. Bigwood caught a 15-ounce catfish.

    “For our prize division, there were 16 entries. Many of the participants were weighing fish,” Gerou said.

    Prize money amounts were determined by the number of entries, with a breakdown from first to fifth place. Ten percent of the money went toward the North Dakota Game and Fish Department to assist with fisheries development, particularly on the Red River.

    “The RRASC also adds $100 to the first place total,” Gerou said.

    Prize winners included:

    • Michael Graves, first place, with a 6 pound, 11 ounce catfish, worth $40.50 and the $100 from the RRASC, for $140.50 total
    • Rich Kellog, second place, with a 5 pound, 5 ounce catfish worth $33.75
    • Brady Graves, third place, with a 4 pound, 7 ounce catfish worth $27
    • Josh Weibusch, fourth place, with a 4 pound, 6 ounce catfish worth $20.25
    • Kristopher Kratz, fifth place, with a 3 pound, 2 ounce catfish worth $13.50

    “Congratulations to all the winners and thank you to everyone who participated in the event,” Gerou said.

  • NDGF, RRASC funding has supported many outdoor amenities

    The North Dakota Game and Fish Department (NDGF) held their Spring Advisory Board Meeting at Lake Elsie this past week. It is a good time to appreciate our long-time relationship with them.

    At one time, the Kidder Recreation Area consisted of a cinder road from 4th Street to the lowhead dam. It is now an outdoor recreation destination. With NDGF and Red River Area Sportsmen’s Club funding, amenities now include:

    • Blacktopped road and parking lots from 4th Street to the Highway 210 bridge.
    • Fish cleaning station and annual $3500 maintenance.
    • Three fishing platforms and four benches.
    • Lowhead dam retrofitted to rock rapids for safety and fish migration.
    • Shoreline fishing areas with steps down steep banks.
    • Boat ramp and dock.
    • Accessible fishing pier with benches.
    • Aquatic Nuisance Species cleaning station coming soon.

    Local river facilities include fishing piers jutting out from shorelines in Chahinkapa Park, Golf Course and southside Bois de Sioux River. A boat landing and dock are located at Brushvale a few miles north of town.

    Youth fishing support provides a rod and reel loaner program, fly fishing equipment, mini-tackle boxes and fishing equipment for four youth fishing derbies. Mooreton Pond projects include a boat landing, dock, rock piers, fishing piers and trout stocking.

    Youth hunting has benefitted from $2000 grants for the annual Youth Waterfowl and Pheasant Hunts, hunter education program support and being a ND Legislature partner to provide public access for hunters.

    Conservation education projects, including the Junior Wildlife Club have been:

    • Outdoor Wildlife Learning Sites at the Kidder Recreation Area tree arboretum and Chahinkapa Zoo’s Watchable Wildlife exhibit.
    • Coloring books of native North Dakota critters for elementary art.
    • ‘Habitats of North Dakota’ for 4th grade classes studying our state.
    • Birding guides and checklists.
    • Funding for wood duck nest boxes.

    Shooting sports have grown under the NDGF umbrella, including:

    • Grants for the archery range and area trap clubs.
    • Grants for National Archery in the Schools (NASP) bows, arrows and targets.
    • Hosting the NASP State Archery Meet at Minot.
    • A grant program for trap shooting teams. 

    The Advisory Board meetings are an excellent opportunity for local sportsmen and NDGF staff to discuss the great outdoors and work together to benefit wildlife and future generations. Interesting topics this spring included:

    • Proliferation of technology that challenges fair chase and hunting ethics.
    • Baiting that increases the odds of Chronic Wasting Disease.
    • 70 percent deer hunter satisfaction rationale to help determine number of tags.
    • A new bobcat season on the eastern half of the state.
    • Partnerships to develop public access on more southeastern area lakes. 
    • Early blue-winged teal season discussion because of their quick exodus to South America. Central Plains Flyway Council helps govern waterfowl hunting laws.
    • Emphasize 3R’s (Recruitment-Retention-Reactivation) as hunter numbers decline.
    • Successful Legislative session with congenial landowner-sportsman access that allows electronic posting of land.
    • It was interesting to hear that South Dakota raised the minimum age for hunting and fishing licenses from 16 to 18. North Dakota remains at 16.

    So many NDGF staff have been terrific to work with. We’ve especially worked with District Game Warden Tim Phalen (hunter education presenter and Youth Waterfowl Hunt organizer), Wildlife Biologist Doug Leier (considerable outdoors marketing), Fisheries Grants – Bob Frohlich (see all the above projects), fisheries biologists – Gene VanEeckhout & B.J. Kratz (management of many southeastern lakes), Hunting Grants – Pat Lothspeich and Audio-Visual Support – Mike Anderson (filming of youth hunts, Jr. Wildlife and fishing derbies).

    It is fantastic to see a local government agency – Park Board, non-profit – Red River Area Sportsmen’s Club and state government agency – ND Game and Fish Department partner together so effectively to benefit sportsmen, hunters, naturalists and fishermen of all ages. A definite win-win-win!

    Two active Twin Towns Area community members were enthusiastically honored Thursday, April 22 by the Red River Area Sportsmen’s Club (RRASC).

    Jerry Oren received the 2021 Sportsman of the Year Award. Rich Truesdell received the Lifetime Membership Award. Troy Richards, a conservation officer with the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, received the Conservationist of the Year Award.

    Oren and Truesdell were on hand to receive their awards, given as part of RRASC’s 34th annual awards banquet. Richards could not attend, as he had been dispatched earlier in the week to the Twin Cities, Minnesota, in anticipation of any emergency following the verdict of Derek Chauvin’s trial, banquet guests learned.

    “(Jerry) has consistently volunteered for the club-sponsored events and its many projects,” RRASC President Greg Gerou said. “He has a positive, upbeat attitude and is a joy to work with. He is an important asset to the club.”

    Oren attended the banquet with wife and fellow RRASC volunteer, Judy. He was singled out for involvement in projects including the Heitkamp Ice Fishing Derby, community fishing nights and work on Mooreton Pond, Mooreton, North Dakota.

    Rich Truesdell’s years of service prompted a frequently-told story.

    “He was invited by his father-in-law, Vince Herding, to attend one of the Hunters Smokers,” Gerou said. “Once he got there, Vince put him to work and he has been an active member ever since.”

    Club members can see that Herding’s mentorship paid off, Gerou said. He cited Truesdell’s work with causes including the Vince Herding Youth Fishing Derby, development of Mooreton Pond and junior wildlife scholarship committee.

    RRASC has another great year in store, Gerou said, but it cannot be done alone or with limited involvement. Volunteers are needed for the:

    Prior to the awards and announcements, club members learned about the Outdoor Adventure Foundation, Inc. from Brian Solum and Philip Heitkamp. The foundation’s chapters nationwide are dedicated to fulfilling hunting, fishing and other outdoor adventures.

    “(We support) children and young adults with cancer or other life-threatening illnesses,” according to information shared. “Combat-disabled veterans who have lost a limb or are wheelchair-bound due to an active service injury (are also eligible).”

    RRASC continues to utilize social media, with the help of members Becky Truesdell and Abby Carlson.

    “Becky is the webmaster for www.rrasc.net and Abby keeps the Facebook and Instagram up to date. I want to give a big thank you to both of them for their attention to detail and their time needed to keep everything current,” Gerou said.

    The banquet concluded with a challenge for RRASC members: to not only grow total membership, but active membership. Look to Daily News for continued coverage of community outdoors activities.

    • Reloading Supplies – https://recobstargetshop.com. Potential trip to Recob’s Target Shop in Wisconsin in May (Paul Roeder). Rifle & Shotgun reloading supplies. If you need additional contact information, please contact Greg Gerou.
    • Bench recognition plaque name nominations. Plan is to have multiple names per plaque – 5 benches will need plaques Nominations received: Randy Hovde, Vince Herding, Mike Fenske, Jeff Trom, Larry Brunkhorst, Marv Manock.. We have been quoted $25 per plaque so far; looking at a couple other options as well.
    • Pop-up online store (Abby) – Pending Board review. Online clothing store; will include stickers, koozies, coffee mugs, etc. Can be used as a fundraiser for the club.
